Training: The Importance of Gaining Trust

As Willow pointed out in chapter 3, I was holding off training Sage because it is soooo very important to give a young pup, or any new dog, time to acclimate to its new environment and its new pack.

Please remember that the pup has been removed from everything and everyone it has known for the first 8 weeks of its life.

I always give a pup at least one week and sometimes two weeks depending on the pup's personality.  During this time we just get to know each other.  If the pup wants to go in a corner and be alone I let it.  It will come to me when it feels comfortable enough to do so.  If I were to push, the the pup would not trust me and that would start the relationship off wrong.

If you give the pup the time it needs to build that trust, you will have a bond that can not be broken.  Training after that trust is built will be far more rewarding for you and your pup.

During that first week, I do take the pup outside for potty training and playing with him if he wants to play.  I just don't push anything the pup is not ready for and we hold off on any official training until that bond has been formed.

Enjoy that bonding time.  The bond that is created during this first week is a bond of loyalty and love and can it not be broken.  It makes for a dog that loves you and wants to do anything to please you.  A dog that waits for your return and lives to play with you.
